venusadept_2: (power of wind)
Felix sees a realm full of grey mist.

He hears a sound behind him, and turns around. There is Sheba, just as he remembers her - but more, somehow. More complete, more Jupiter, more Sheba, than ever before; no longer the little girl she was in so many ways.

She opens her mouth, and begins to sing.

"How could I know I would have to leave you?
How could I know I would hurt you so?
You were the one I was born to love,
Oh, how could I ever know?
How could I ever know?"

"Sheba, I never -" he begins, but she cuts him off with an upraised hand.

"How can I say to go on without me?
How when I know you still need me so?
How can I say not to dream about me?
How could I ever know?
How could I ever know?" she continues.

"Forgive me, can you forgive me?
And hold me in your heart -
And find some new way to love me
Now that we're apart." Although she doesn't move, she seems to be more distant now, her hands on her chest.

"How could I know I would never hold you;
Never again in this world, but oh," she raises her arms as her hair and clothes move, although Felix doesn't feel any wind.
"Sure as you breathe I am there inside you
How could I ever know?
How could I ever know?"

She steps back, and gestures to Felix. Somehow, he knows that he needs to sing, and what words.

"How can I hope to go on without you?
How can I know where you'd have me go?
How can I bear not to dream about you?
How can I let you go?" His voice nearly cracks on the last word; how could he let go of her, of the memory of the pair of them?

"How could I ever know?" she returns, gently.

Felix tries a different tack.

"All I need -" he starts, but Sheba - still gentle, but also forceful - interrupts "- is there with our people." He knows what she means: the children he teaches, the crises he averts. Nevertheless, he continues:
"All I would ask -" Again he is cut off, and she finishes for him "- is care for the world that I loved."

She continues, "Come, go with me, safe I will keep you."

Giving in, he answers, "Where you would lead me, there I would-"

Smiling, she begins to sing at the same time - not interrupting, but joining: "There I would; there we would; there we will go!"

Somehow, by this point, they were holding each other's hands, crying but still singing. "How could I know?
Tell me, how could I know?
Ever to know you will never leave me -
How could we ever know?
How could we know?
How could I ever know?"

As the last note fades, Sheba begins to disappear as well. Felix reaches out, but she is gone. Felix is left with only her voice. "Felix... Don't live for me... Live for the world... For Alchemy..."
venusadept_2: (Sheba reflection)
It's over. She's gone. There's no reason to stay.

And yet, where would he go that wouldn't remind him of her?

But he's been in and around Vale too long already. He can't settle. The world needs him.

Above all, he can't stop. The world needs him. Perhaps not as much as it did five years ago, but it needs him.

He stands in the pass that leads to... whatever Mount Aleph has become. If he remembers right, the Boulder that marked the official boundary used to be right there. From here, he can see most of the village - but not the house where she spent her last weeks, nor the field where they buried her trapped her.

And yet, he thinks he can hear her here, feel her here. Feel her telling him to go, to be free...
venusadept_2: (dead Sheba)
All he could think was I wasn't there, I wasn't there.

He'd told her he'd be by her side, and he wasn't. And now he couldn't be.

She was gone, they were putting her in the ground No, don't do that, she needs the wind wants the sky must have the air and there was nothing he could do. Nothing he'd been able to do...

But he should have tried. When had he let impossibility stop him? He stepped forward -

No, he didn't. The others were holding him back. Didn't they understand? He'd promised to be with her. He wanted to explain, but this was a funeral, you didn't talk at funerals.

And then she was gone, and for all the people around he was alone. Completely alone.

In the end I want to be standing
At the beginning with you.
venusadept_2: (dead Sheba)
It wasn't the first time they'd been to the edge of the world, but it was the first time since Alchemy had been restored. Sheba was curious to see what it looked like over the edge, again, and to see if anything had changed.

This time, though, Felix was a great deal less nervous about it.

Once Sheba started to lean over the edge, she suddenly jerked to a stop. She looked around, noticed the giant Psynergetic hand holding her cape, and saw Felix sitting a short distance away with the barest hint of a smile, holding Isaac's Catch Beads.

It was then that Felix started to become worried, as he, in turn, saw Sheba's face take on an impish grin. In a quick movement she wriggled out of her cape and hopped along the edge to a spot out of range of the beads.

Faster than he had ever moved before, Felix rushed to her side and physically grabbed her arm. He didn't like the edge, didn't like being so close to nothing - but there was no way on or off the face of the planet that he'd let that nothing swallow Sheba.

I'll be there when the storm is through!
venusadept_2: (power of wind)
She'd been all over the world; he knew that. Most of the places she'd been, he'd been with her.

But somehow, Sheba loved Vale.

Felix didn't really understand it. Even he didn't really love Vale; not now.

But he couldn't deny the joy on her face as she - with the other Adepts who had joined them on the journey - helped the locals clean up and rebuild Vale.

I'll be there when the world stops turning!
venusadept_2: (older fight)
Yampi Desert.

Apparently, an endless expanse of sand and rock.

It seemed like the Mayor of Madra was right; there was no way through to Alhafra. They -

This line of thought cut off abruptly, as Sheba pointed out... something. It looked like a moving lump of sand. Felix put a hand to the ground, trying to feel out what it could be, but since he wasn't very used to sand and it was moving too quickly, he couldn't tell anything.

"Sheba," he said softly, "Do you think you can blow the sand off of that, so we can see what it is?" She nodded, and set up a wind to do just that. Unfortunately, the thing kept covering itself back up, and Sheba couldn't keep up her wind long enough to get more than a glimpse of red.

Felix had an idea. He pulled out the Pound Cube, crept toward the lump's path, and Pounded the ground right in front of it. It jerked backward and up out of the sand, revealing itself as a large scorpion. It ran across the sand away from Felix and disappeared through a pass.

The next thing Felix knew, he and Sheba were chasing it at full speed.

Wonderful journey!
venusadept_2: (ghost)
Felix stopped the ship. "This is where we're supposed to take the Hover Jade, right? I can't find a way to get in, between the rivers and forests."

"That's right," said Sheba distractedly. Felix thought she might be trying to Reveal the route or some such. "Try... up the river. The ship can take it."

Piers winced. "Please... be careful with her. It's true that Lemurian ships are strong, but they are designed for the open ocean."

Felix nodded. He started around the continent again, looking for rivers that might lead all the way through. On his second try he found one that looked wide and deep enough for the ship.

It was odd, sailing up a river in such a way. Felix had never truly grasped how fast the ship was, but now that he could see trees rushing by on both sides he did.

Gradually the current of the river shifted. It started with the engine not needing to work as hard. Soon enough, the flow had actually reversed, and was pushing the ship along. Piers was muttering something about water not working that way, but Felix was too busy with the wheel to pay much attention. Then Sheba started screaming in his ear.

Felix jerked away and turned to look at her. "What's going on?" Sheba didn't seem to be in any danger.

"It's just so exciting!" she responded. "Don't you think so?"

At that moment, the ship reached what Felix could only describe as a bump in the river, and actually went flying for a moment. Felix latched his arms around the rail, but could only stare as Sheba spread her arms and laughed. After a moment, once the ship had settled, he started to chuckle along.

Life is a road, now and forever:
venusadept_2: (long day)
It was a good thing, in Felix's opinion, that they hadn't encountered anyone once they got into Babi Lighthouse. He didn't like the way Saturos and Menardi kept terrifying and attacking people. He didn't think anyone had died, but there was no way to make sure, not when the Proxians were in such a hurry.

In any case, they had reached the part of the Venus Ruins the lighthouse was built on. At the other end of the room was a door that looked like it hadn't been opened in a very long time. In fact, Felix didn't see how it could open at all.

Alex, as usual, hung back without explaining himself as Saturos hurried the others over to the door. "Felix," the latter said, "come here and close your eyes."

Puzzled, he did so. Sheba looked around nervously, staying close to him. He decided to ask her about it later, but things were tense enough at the moment.

"This wall bears an invisible button. I want you to find it and press it."

His eyes still closed, Felix frowned in puzzlement. Nonetheless, he reached out and put his hand on the wall, trying to feel its structure with his Psynergy. Abruptly he found something odd. Exerting his power a bit, he felt it move. A moment later the room filled with the groan of millennia-old hinges opening.

Suddenly Felix heard unfamiliar voices from the other side of the room. Saturos and Alex quickly herded them all through the door, which closed behind them.

Feeling for Sheba's hand, Felix stepped forward into the dark.

Love is a river, I want to keep flowing;
venusadept_2: (Default)
It was over. The lighthouses were lit, Alchemy was returning, and it was time to go home.

They started back to the ship, but before long Felix noticed that Sheba had fallen behind. He turned to look for her and found that she was crouching, evidently quite interested with something on the ground.

"Sheba...?"

She looked up. "Hey, Felix. Come look at this."

He bent over to see what was so interesting. His jaw nearly dropped.

Purple crystals were growing up through the snow. Actually growing, something like a plant, branching and splitting. He reached out a hand and felt an unmistakable tug at the back of his mind.

"Psynergy stones?" he asked, astonished.

Sheba looked up again, grinned, and shook her head. "Alchemy stones. Look around. Has the world ever seemed so alive, so interesting? The seal wasn't just blocking the elements - it was on people's minds, too."

Life is a road, and I want to keep going,
venusadept_2: (power of earth)
Felix was tired. The weather kept getting worse, and the swirling snow kept him from being sure they were even going in the right direction. Finally, he slumped to the ground.

"Felix? What's wrong?" asked Sheba, from a little behind him.

"Are we ever going to get there? Will we ever be able to light Mars?"

"Of course we will. Look." She held his arm and did something - Felix thought it might be based on Reveal, but he wasn't sure - and pointed off to the right.

He looked and saw a blue glow. "You got the stars, and you lit Mercury, didn't you?" she reminded him. "Even though it's the element that opposed most of your group at the time?"

"Well, yes, but Alex was there, and it's not a direct opposition for me," he objected.

"Even so," said Sheba, and Felix could hear a smile in her voice. "Look," she said again, pointing farther right, where Felix could see yellow shining dimly. "Even when the only thing holding you together was the threat of Isaac following you, you made it to Venus. And even when Isaac defeated Saturos, he didn't stop the beacon from being lit."

Felix could only nod; she'd been there for much of that.

She indicated a spot farther still to the right, where purple gleamed through the blizzard. "Then, even though Saturos' ship sank, and Karst was hounding you, you got to Jupiter. And when she and Agatio attacked you, despite the lighthouse opposing you directly this time, you held up fine for a while before Jenna or I got there."

Again, Felix nodded mutely.

Sheba pulled on his arm and turned, so that they were facing each other directly. "So why, when you've overcome all of that, do you think you wouldn't be able to light one more lighthouse? Isaac's helping this time, and it's an allied element for you - your sister's element, for that matter!" She smiled at him, brushed his cheek with her lips, and tugged him up. "Let's go save the world."

--

This is the start!
venusadept_2: (Venus Lighthouse)
Felix hadn't expected the lighthouse to split. But it had, and now it was shaking horribly.

He was about to tell Sheba to lie down for stability when a particularly strong tremor knocked her down - and over the edge. He heard a high shriek.

"Noooo! Sheba!"

Then he was at the spot where she had fallen - except that she hadn't fallen. She'd managed to catch herself on the edge, and was now hanging by her fingerttips. In a moment she had lost her grip with one hand, then the other.

The time for words was past. There was only one thing to do. Felix stood up, leaned over the edge, and jumped after her.

--

When I lost hope, you were there to remind me,
venusadept_2: (ghost)
"-a Jupiter, aren't you? You direct the wind?" Felix was shouting to be heard over the noise of the wind and what it was doing to the tent fabric.

The girl nodded, wide-eyed.

"Then read my mind!"

She closed her eyes, and Felix could see and feel her Psynergy reaching into his mind. The wind slackened a bit, then died completely. The girl rushed toward him...

...But before she crossed the few feet she had disappeared. again

--

Unexpected, what you did to my heart!
venusadept_2: (long day)
"This is it."

Felix squeezed Sheba's hand and gestured to the building. "If anyone in the world has your answers, they're in there."

It was a magnificent building. Huge but not imposing, looking like it was about to drift away on the winds - which were much stronger than Felix expected, at this altitude. Parts of it seemed to blend into the pale purple dome that protected the floating island from flying monsters and helped keep air in.

Felix realized that while he'd been pondering the scenery, Sheba had already gotten several yards closer to the building. He hurried to catch up.

--

No one told me I was going to find you.
venusadept_2: (memory)
Sheba had been disappointed when they finally got the Hover Jade. It didn't seem to lift them more than a few inches off the ground, and only for a few seconds.

"That's not a hover! It's not even much of a jump!" she'd complained.

But she wasn't complaining now.

"Look, Felix!"

Felix was trying very hard not to look. That they were still under Jupiter Lighthouse, in a room carved out of ordinary rock, helped, but he still didn't like being eight or ten feet above the floor, on a platform made entirely of Psynergy. Especially when he wasn't in control of it. Intellectually, he knew there was no safer way to get into the Lighthouse, and that Sheba wouldn't do anything dangerous, but he couldn't...

His train of thought was interrupted by Sheba's hand slipping into his. Small and light as a curl of wind she might be, but that contact calmed Felix enough to open his eyes and begin to glimpse what she found so amazing.

--

At the beginning with you!
venusadept_2: (long day)
It had been days since they first sighted Air's Rock, and nearly as long since they'd started to scale it. Everyone was tired. Sheba especially, because none of the others could cast Whirlwind. The others were flagging, too - Kraden simply because of his age, and Jenna and Felix because they were surrounded by huge amounts of Wind energy, allied with neither of their elements.

At length, they came to a long stretch of those floating platforms that were so prevalent here - and that Felix hated. It was one thing to be high up, he'd gotten over that on the sea journey from Prox to Angara, but it was quite another to be high up and held by nothing but insubstantial air.

Still, there looked to be no other way to get Reveal, so he gritted his teeth and started forward.

--

Now here we are, and I'm suddenly standing
venusadept_2: (older tired)
Felix still couldn't believe islands could float.

That wasn't particularly important now, though. The weird wave had hit and knocked them into whichever continent this was. Unfortunately, it had also scattered them. Felix himself wasn't seriously injured, but he didn't know how the others were faring. After calling a few times and getting no response, he set out - north, arbitrarily - to see whom he could find.

Then he was among trees - not enough to be called a forest, but enough to be the dominant feature. It was there that he found Sheba, her head against a tree. He cast Cure, she woke up and stood up, and together they went to find the others - and the future.

...Never dreaming what we'd have to go through.
