The people he's talking to stir. "So what's the problem?" asks Mia.
"Well... two problems. First, it would take a careful balance of input from all the elements, and I am not sure of exactly how to keep it balanced. And second..."
He trails off, takes a deep breath, and continues. "Second, I think this is why the ancients placed the Seal."
As he had expected, that produces a bit of an uproar. For a few moments, everyone is speaking loudly enough that no one can tell what's being said. Then Kraden asks, in a voice pitched to carry, "Why do you think that?" The others get quiet to hear his answer.
Felix is not exactly sure how to answer this. The real answer is that parts of the design that the Dullahan implanted into his brain feel like Milliways, rather than like Alchemy, but as far as he knows nobody else here has ever been to Milliways. He finally settles on, "Part of it is the way the Dullahan talked about it. And partly... I've seen what Alchemy can do with combining elements, and this... doesn't seem quite the same. It seems outside, somehow, like it's using something that isn't part of the world."
Kraden nods, and Garet bursts out, "Then why do you want to do it? If this is what the Wise One was warning us about, you should just forget about it!"
Felix raises an eyebrow at him. "You have seen the vortexes, haven't you? And felt what they're doing to the places they show up?" He turns back to Kraden. "You've been keeping track of their appearances, haven't you?" At the old man's nod, Felix continues, "What trends have you noticed?"
Kraden coughs and says, "They are becoming more frequent and severe. Larger vortexes, doing more damage, and lasting longer..." He shakes his head. "I do understand your worry, Felix."
Felix spreads his arms. "You see? It is the same choice that we made ten years ago, except that we don't know that the world will die either way."
Ivan looks straight into Felix's eyes. "So... d'you think the risk is worth it?"
The Venus Adept slumps. "I don't know. That's why I wanted to talk to you, to hear what you thought." He pauses, then goes on, "It's too much of a decision to make on my own."
Everyone is silent. Isaac looks around at the others, then speaks up. "You might have to, Felix. You've been out in the world, keeping an eye on things, much more than the rest of us. I think you know more about Alchemy than any of us except Kraden and maybe Ivan. And you're the one who's got the plans in his head." He shakes his head. "Turning this... 'Light Beyond Alchemy' loose rubs me the wrong way, but I'll support you whichever way you choose." The others nod their agreement.
